Starting Point

Satuan Kerja Pencegahan dan Penanganan Kekerasan Seksual Universitas Syiah Kuala (Satgas PPKS USK), or known in English as Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Working Unit of Syiah Kuala University) was established in 2022. This working unit focuses on preventing and handling sexual violence cases at the university level. Its area of responsibility encompasses cases that occur within the campus area and any that arise during off-campus activities, such as Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN), community service, student organisations, thesis guidance activities, fieldwork, internships at the Kampus Merdeka programme, student residences, and other related events. If sexual violence occurs to campus residents, it can be processed by the Satgas PPKS USK.

The Satgas PPKS USK consists of eleven members: six students, four lecturers (one from the Faculty of Law and the other three are counsellors), and one staff member. The primary purpose of Satgas PPKS USK is to prevent sexual violence by and against students, lecturers, teaching staff, and all civitas at the University of Syiah Kuala.

Peace Journey

The Satgas PPKS USK has made a significant contribution to the fight against sexual violence throughout the campus. Some of the cases handled by Satgas PPKS USK are about sexual violence in romantic relationships, sexual violence involving power relations (be it lecturers to students or seniors to juniors) and handling the trauma of survivors of sexual violence.

However, the Satgas PPKS USK has often had a bad image due to students' ignorance of the procedures for dealing with cases of sexual violence. To counter that problem, one of their strategies is to make offline and online campaigns against sexual violence on campus. These campaigns were conducted in collaboration with student organisations. In addition, they prevent sexual violence in the campus environment by creating a programme where new students sign an 'integrity pact' not to commit sexual violence.

Success Stories

One of the achievements of the Satgas PPKS USK is to raise awareness of the impropriety of sexual-insinuating humour and its negative impact within the university. Along the way, the Satgas PPKS USK is also increasingly appreciated by the academic community, including students. Through their dedication to mainstreaming the sexual violence-free campaign at the university, various policies have been imposed, such as restrictions on thesis supervision scheduling outside office hours and academic sanctions for lecturers, students, and university leaders who are involved in sexual violence.
