Starting Point

Satuan Kerja PPKS Universitas Syiah Kuala (Satgas USK) was established in 2022. This is a working unit that focuses on handling and prevention of sexual violence at the university level. Not only are they handling sexual violence in the campus area, but also any that occurs during off-campus activities, such as KKN (students' community service), student organisations, thesis guidance activities, fieldwork, internships at Campus Merdeka, student residents, etc. As long as this happens to campus residents, it can be handled with Satgas PPKS USK.

Satgas PPKS USK consists of 11 members: 6 students, 4 lecturers (1 faculty of law lecturer, 3 counselors), and 1 staff member. The main purpose of Satgas PPKS USK is to prevent sexual violence by and to students, lecturers, teaching staff, and all civitas at the University of Syiah Kuala.

The Satgas PPKS USK has made a big contribution to socialise the fight against sexual violence on campus throughout the academic community. Some of the cases handled by Satgas PPKS USK are about sexual violence in romantic relationships, sexual violence involving power relations, be it lecturers to students or seniors to juniors, and handling the trauma of victims of sexual violence. 

One of the strategies used by Satgas PPKS USK is to make a campaign against sexual violence on campus. This campaign was conducted in collaboration with student organisations. In addition, contribute to the prevention of sexual violence in the campus environment by creating a program for new students to sign an 'integrity pact' not to commit sexual violence. Lastly, Satgas PPKS USK also uses social media to create campaigns against sexual violence.

Success Stories

Along the way, the Satgas PPKS USK has often had a bad image due to students' ignorance of the procedures for dealing with cases of sexual violence. However, because of their achievements, Satgas PPKS USK is now increasingly appreciated by the academic community, including students. One of the achievements of the presence of Satgas PPKS USK is the beginning of an awareness in the academic community that it's wrong to make jokes that insinuate sexual tendencies.

Through their dedication to socialising the sexual violence-free campaign at the university level, various policies have emerged, such as no thesis supervision outside office hours and academic sanctions for lecturers, students, and university leaders who are involved in sexual violence.
