Kick-Off Roundtable of Joint ASEAN-IPR & ERIA Research Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) and Women in the Digital Economy (WDE): Understanding Synergies for the Future of ASEAN

Starting Point

Noraida C. Abo is the Executive Director of the United Youth of the Philippines-Women (UnYPhil-Women). Her organisation supports the UN Women’s initiative to empower women leaders advocating for gender equality, peace, and good governance in the Bangsamoro region. Her background as an internally displaced person (IDP) drives her efforts to aid fellow Bangsamoro women who share a similar fate. Through her effort, she also demonstrates the remarkable resilience of women. Her story not only highlights the struggles caused by armed conflict but also serves as a testament to the ongoing challenges faced by the Bangsamoro people.

Peace Journey

In running her organisation, she oversees the overall programme, project management, and operations. She raises funds through contracts for project engagements with partner organisations and establishes partnerships with local and international donor agencies. She ensures the sustainability of her organisation in providing essential aid, such as cash-for-food, water, sanitation, and hygiene support, to individuals displaced by the long-standing cyclical armed conflict in Maguindanao, with assistance from Oxfam and the European Union's Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid.

Success Stories

Ms. Abo’s organisation works with local women, peace advocates, and organisations to improve women’s leadership in the new Bangsamoro political entity. With support from funding agencies, its initiative focuses on developing the capacities of women leaders, including those from Moro, indigenous, young, and elected officials, to enhance their political engagement.
