Starting Point

The Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC) was established in 2015 due to the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA). As JMC is a committee undertaking mediation and facilitating the NCA signatories, Ms Naw Fuji San became interested and decided to work in the related field. She was an office staff member at the JMC Administrative and Logistics Department. She was involved in conflict prevention and Capacity-Building Training Projects.

Peace Journey

She served only as an office staff member at the Administration and Logistics Department at JMC. She suggested that dialogue is the best solution for the dispute between the conflicting parties. At first, there were a few challenges for her as it was her first time working for an entity that liaised between the Tatmadaw and EAOs. Since her responsibility was confined to office work, she did not experience many challenges. She wants more women to participate in the peace-building process. In her opinion, most Myanmar women have less interest in politics. Therefore, it is crucial to convey to women that their role constitutes strength in building peace. This kind of motivation is necessary for more women to participate.

Success Stories

From 2017 to 2020, she facilitated capacity-building programs and provided teaching aid kits to these programs. She arranged interactions between the JMC committee members and external peace activists. She raised awareness about the NCA among citizens in the relevant regions through talks and training. She also shared obligations as prescribed in the NCA with the signatories so that they would comply.
