Starting Point
Ms. Hmuaki Ralti is a female mamber of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Myanmar (PCM). Her appointment as the representative of the church is her first engagement with the peace process.
Peace Journey
In that appointment, the church aims to negotiate with the conflicting groups for the safe return of the displaced people. Moreover, the church will provide assistance to displaced people and gives children access to education. With her current role, she is expected to prevent conflicts and help displaced people return home. In the future, she wishes to work for peace and the development of underdeveloped villages and communities.
Particularly on women’s issue, she stated that women are frequently suffering from domestic violence and rapes in her native land. In her region, there are the lack of a designated office to file complaints and and a specific official to take action on such cases. It shows that women have not been prioritised. Based on this context, she expected that it would be appropriate for women to participate in all sectors of the peace process, and it would be better if the ratio of men and women in peace organisations were equal.
Success Stories
In her opinion, groups involved in conflicts have the responsibility for negotiation as only through such a mechanism peace will be achieved. In this context, she stated that the government has been negotiating with its best efforts to decrease the tension of conflicts, but these efforts are not yet successful.
