Starting Point
Dr. Thet Thet Zin is the President of the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation (MWAF). The Federation's activities include ensuring women’s rights, eliminating discrimination against women, and providing opportunities for women to participate in peace processes. In making peace, it is essential to identify the primary causes of the conflict and foster trust between the government and the people. Women should be given greater access to decision-making processes, security, and business areas.
Peace Journey
She has not directly participated in the peace processes, but has been involved in peacebuilding and conflict prevention. She is carrying out awareness programmes, educational talks, and self-defence training to prevent young women from violence and trafficking. Additionally, she educates and encourages school-aged children to attend school. She also assists students who face challenges in continuing their education, supporting them annually until they graduate. She is also donating and providing aid to internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps.
Success Stories
She has made a substantial contribution to women's issues, including opening self-defence training for women. Moreover, she is involved in women's development and anti-trafficking activities with her organisation. Further, her organisation provided funds and loans with low interest to women, as well as vocational training. These efforts will lead to financial freedom for women to be free from abuse and violence.
As a lesson, it is still necessary for her to learn the representation and participation of women in peace processes. Several challenges existed, including the underrepresentation and exclusion of women from decision-making processes in peace negotiations, as well as the lack of academic knowledge, technology, and appropriate resources to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the peace process.
